Chad’s Corner

Chad Larson is the former President of Triple Point Solutions and the Technical Strategist for the Alliance Technologies Enterprise Architecture Group. In his Corner he provides a little human perspective from the frontlines of Information Technology.

Every year when I get to April I wonder if my head will lock up and I’m going to need to reboot from trying to understand what is expected of me in taxes. But tax season is over now and I’ve gained a little perspective. Not to mention way more respect for accountants. Their job is mired in details, legalese, and whims of the current and past political administrations. My tax forms went way beyond the 1040 EZ years ago and selling Triple Point Solutions was a painful education in tax repercussions.
So, I want to say thank you to all the people that choose accounting as a career.  My eyes glaze over every time I look at an income tax form – I can read the information, but I can’t seem to process it.

It’s a lot like the 3% of Iowa drivers that think that annual license plate renewal sticker shouldn’t cover up any other sticker on their license plate, so they spread them all out. I think their eyes glaze over and they don’t pay attention, as if the directions for sticker placement are just some misguided suggestion.

But in seems in our world almost nothing stays the same, whether it’s income tax forms, medicine, laws, or current technology. Nothing seems to be static. It’s exciting, but mind boggling. Managing the information and changes matters a great deal. It’s not just how you do it – it’s also how you feel as you approach it (this keeps your eyes focused). But every year it seems everything keeps changing faster (except for the sticker placement) and that’s what makes working in those fields exciting and uniquely challenging and rewarding.

I’m just glad there are other people out there that both like and understand to do some of the things I can’t, like fill out income tax forms.  I’d just like to thank everyone who focuses on developing their unique skills and talents. Thanks for your help.
