Get to Know Your Network Engineer - Alan Ellis

How long have you been in the IT business?

I’d have to work backward, but it’s been a long time. A month from now is my ten year anniversary for working with Chad, at the previous company and, Triple Point Solutions, and now Alliance. And I spent around seven years at other places before that – a school district, as an independent consultant, at a sportswear company, and a printing company. After I got my degree from tech school, I started at Frigidaire, as a test technician for their washers and dryers. I did that for awhile before I got into IT. Overall, if I add it all up, I’d say about 17 years, give or take.

Do you have any specializations?

I am the Alliance Technologies Mac guy. I work on Apple computer and networks with a mix of Apple and PCs. That’s my main specialty, though I work with PC networks, too.

What do you do for fun?

I’m interested in robotics, but I geek duck hunting. I enjoy the science of duck hunting, as well as the time spent with my brother and my nephews. We use Roboducks to attract the ducks, an iPhone river topography application, GPS – it’s about a mix of the science and nature. Of course, if I could figure out a way to network the ducks, that would be great.

But I also like getting out there – out on the river, against the elements. There have been some really nasty days – it’s really the only danger that I face anymore. Some mornings, traveling up the river, predawn, it’s snowing, a full boat, and I think to myself…this is just nuts. But it’s part of the excitement, I guess.

Networking the ducks – would you call that duckworking? Just kidding! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, Alan!
