Vince's Tech Tips - Universal Extractor, Spiceworks, Media Player Issue
Vince Meek, one of our professional Network Engineers here at Alliance Technologies, offers some friendly tech tips to help your IT Department and general users alike.
Tech Tip 1:
Universal Extractor is a single program that will extract almost any type of compressed folder or file, whether it’s a simple zip file, an installation program, or even a Windows Installer (.msi) file. It unzips anything you can throw at it. Best of all, it’s completely free. Download it at the website: www.legroom.net/software/uniextract
Tech Tip 2:
Need desktop inventory and helpdesk software? Take a look at SpiceWorks at www.spiceworks.com. Spiceworks is a free solution that allows network management. It can generate reports, draw diagrams, and help you manage your IT infrastructure.
Tech Tip 3:
Issue: Media Player hangs computer or will not start (Windows Media Player 10 and 11) Solution:
Reregister the following DLLs:
C:\Windows\System32\jscript.dll
C:\Windows\System32\vbscript.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wmp.dll
C:\Windows\System32\Mspmsp.dll
If the issue persists, unplug all USB devices. Open the Task Manager and insure wmplayer.exe is not running. Restart Media Player. If this doesn’t work, download windowsmedia11-kb933547-x86-intl.exe from Microsoft. Install the patch to Windows Media Player. This should fix the issue.
